Rabbi Elmer Berger, author of The Jewish Dilemma (1945) and subject of Rabbi Outcast: Elmer Berger and American Jewish Anti-Zionism by Jack Ross (2011), was a founding member of the American Council for Judaism 1943 and served as its executive director until 1968, when he resigned because of his disagreement with Israel’s Zionist policies. He then founded “American Jewish Alternatives to Zionism, Inc.” in 1969. In this pamphlet, he responds to the recent lifting of the Arab Oil Embargo by positing that the way the U.S. can achieve a steady supply of oil and to promote peace in the Middle East (and American relations in these countries) is to cease supporting Israeli Zionism.
